DLD Awareness Day (Friday 17th October)!

Did you know… Approximately 7% to 9% of children present with significant impairments in the ability to understand and produce language in spoken, written, and/ or signed modes, despite otherwise typical development. This is referred to as Developmental Language Disorder (DLD).

What is Developmental Language Disorder (DLD)?

·       DLD is a developmental condition that causes difficulties with using language in speaking, listening, reading, and writing

·       DLD is a diagnostic label to describe children with persistent language problems having a functional impact on communication or learning in the absence of any other biomedical condition

·       DLD is a lifelong condition that persists into adulthood

DLD Tips!

Students with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) may:

·       Find it hard to understand words, follow instructions or answer questions

·       Struggle to find the words to express their thoughts, feelings, and ideas

·       Display challenging behaviors

·       Have a smaller vocabulary, and difficulty learning and/or recalling words they want to use.

·       Have trouble with ordering and structuring sentences and paragraphs for both spoken and written language (conversations and telling stories)

·       Experience challenges with reading and writing

·       Struggle to remember what they have heard or read

By learning more about DLD and making small, intentional adjustments in how we communicate and help students to learn, we can help all children to feel understood, confident, and included.

For more information, the Reading & Writing Centre has some fantastic resources and information found here about DLD: https://readingwritingcentre.education.qld.gov.au/language-disorders#action External link

Our students are amazing! Daily they proudly represent their families proudly making great choices. We want to show just how wonderful student behaviour is in a graphic. This graphic shows the % of students within the week whose choices never once needed a correction or consequence! This is fantastic! Our goal is 100% each week. Let’s go team DBay and achieve 100%.
