Year 6 Camp

Our Year 6 students are heading off to camp from Wednesday to Friday next week (4–6 February) and excitement is building! Please make sure all required paperwork has been completed, including any medical information, and that all of your child’s belongings are clearly named.

Camp is always a highlight of the year, and we’re looking forward to seeing our Year 6's try new things, challenge themselves and build great connections with both staff and friends. It’s going to be a fantastic adventure!

Supporting Communication from Day One

Welcome back to another exciting school year! I hope you and your family had a refreshing break and are feeling ready for the year ahead. My name is Morgan Johnson, and I am the school-based Speech-Language Pathologist that services Deception Bay State School. I am delighted to welcome all families, both new and returning, into our wonderful school community.

As the school-based Speech-Language Pathologist, I work closely with students, teachers, and families across the school to support children's speech, language, communication, and literacy skills. Together, we aim to help every child feel confident, connected, and ready to succeed.

Throughout the year, I will be sharing a weekly newsletter article with helpful tips, strategies, and updates to support your child's communication development at home and at school.

Helping Your Child Settle into School: Communication Tips for Families

Starting a new school year can be exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming for some children. Strong communication skills play a big role in helping children feel comfortable, make friends, and engage in learning. Here are some simple ways you can support your child at home:

1.      Talk About the School Day

  • Ask open-ended questions such as:
  • “What was the best part of your day?"
  • “Who did you play with today?"
  • “What did you learn today in class?"
  • Give your child time to think and respond
  • Show interest by listening and responding positively

2.      Build Routines and Predictability

  • Talk through daily routines (mornings, school time, afternoons, bedtime)
  • Use simple language and visual cues if needed

3.      Encourage Clear Communication

  • Encourage your child to:
  • Ask for help
  • Share ideas

  • Join conversations

4.      Support Social Communication

  • Practice skills such as taking turns, listening, and greeting others
  • Role-play situations like asking to join a game or speaking to a teacher

Have a great week everyone!
